WSP is currently initiating a search for a
Full Time Construction Inspector
for our
Irvine, California
office in
Orange County
. Be involved in projects with our
Construction Services Group
and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges.
The Construction provides support to the Resident Engineer on complex construction management projects or programs, by performing construction engineering and inspection activities. This person must be capable of applying diversified knowledge of construction engineering principles and practices and monitor construction for compliance with project documents. Must be able to read and interpret project plans and specification and has working knowledge of current Caltrans and industry construction standards. Elements to be inspected or monitored may include maintenance of traffic, earthwork, drainage, utility relocation, storm water pollution prevention implementation and compliance, construction of roadway sections, pedestrian and bike facilities, structure elements of work, traffic and lighting improvements, landscape work and other similar activities.
Your Impact
Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, structural plans, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, flow diagrams, material sampling, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for single, multi-phase, or multi-site field inspection activities.
Use survey instruments, metering devices, and test equipment to perform inspections on projects of moderate complexity and/or scope, including proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, construction, materials, controls, resources, layout, alignment, and elevation to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, and construction or operating permits.
Follow standard practices to provide technical assistance and guidance that accounts for the proper inspection, construction, and functioning of buildings, highways, roads, bridges, materials, structures, infrastructure, equipment, and/or mechanical systems according to design standard specifications.
Act as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for projects of a moderate scope and complexity within a district.
Verify load calculations, change orders, interpretation of contract plans and specifications; resolving differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
Monitor project phasing plans and contractors' work to ensure quality control and contract compliance; documenting work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
Attend pre-construction meetings and answer questions from contractors and other attendees.
Assist with calculating payments due to contractors for work completed.
Write technical reports summarizing inspection findings and conclusions; generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, flow diagrams, 2D/3D illustrations, and reports.
Assist technical staff, project managers, and contractors with risk identification and assessment, offering input, analysis, escalation, or resolution with construction, mitigation, and improvement activities for more intricate and involved construction or engineering problems.
Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of any field/site work, reviewing staffing, and equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
Provide guidance and training to entry-level inspection staff.
Engage in contact with client and contractor personnel to schedule and coordinate project inspection.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Minimum of 9 years of experience, 5 of which are as Construction Engineer on Caltrans right of way
Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and material
Understanding of public construction contracts on Caltrans right of way
Ability to review and analyze construction drawings and contract specifications
Experience with Caltrans construction standards and manuals
Proficiency in reading and writing in English
Ability to review construction submittals, request for information and respond
Ability to analyze field construction issues
Ability to conduct meetings with the contractor, owner and third parties
Ability to inspect, document and coordinate site work including material testing
Ability and skills to assist with construction costs of changed conditions
Valid CA driver's license and ability to drive to construction sites
Solid written and verbal skills in English
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Ability to utilize Microsoft office software
Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
Preferred Qualifications
BSCE in Engineering or related Degree from ABET certified university, EIT certificate is desirable
California PE license, as defined by the Professional Engineers Act Roadway construction/highway/public works/transit experience
CALTRANS roadway inspection experience
Knowledge of Caltrans manuals and standards
CMAA certification is a plus
Well-developed expertise in construction management
Ability to analyze project construction issues
Commitment to keep up to date with technical knowledge
Compensation and Benefits:
WSP provides a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings focused on a providing health and financial stability throughout the employee's career.
Expected Salary: $78/hr - $95/hr depending on experience level, location and other qualifications.
Employee's hourly rate may change if/when they perform services that are covered by California's Prevailing Wage laws on public sector projects,
or are covered by other applicable wage and hour laws.
