CLASSIFICATION: Salaried - Exempt
PAY RANGE: $84,000 - $90,000
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Mechanical General Foreman is responsible for directing and coordinating employees in the inspection and maintenance of cars in a safe, efficient, and economical manner.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: Car Superintendent, et al.
Supervises: Composite Mechanic - Carmen
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provides leadership to all Mechanical Department activities.
• Supervises Mechanical employees in the safe and successful performance of their duties.
• Provides support for Chief Mechanical Officer and Asst. Chief Mechanical Officer
• Collaborates with the Transportation department and other internal IAIS customers to continually meet expectations.
• Ensure all mechanical work complies with federal, state, and local safety regulations. This includes leadership through training to ensure departmental compliance.
• Conducts operations/efficiency tests to ensure safety, compliance, and consistency with departmental expectations.
• Conduct regular safety meetings and inspections of work areas.
• Responsible for controlling costs to meet budget goals such as inventory management and managing other expenditures.
• Purchasing materials to support department needs such as electrical and car components, as well as fuel and other consumable products related to freight transportation.
• Responsible for building and grounds maintenance for the shop area.
• Recordkeeping as required by the company and AAR/federal regulations.
• Must be available to respond to emergencies, including derailment clean-up. Also includes investigating and developing facts in connection with personal injuries, derailments, and rule violations by mechanical employees.
• Responsible for working hours as scheduled including holidays, weekends, and overtime hours.
• Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned and occasional travel will be required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education, Licenses/Certifications, and Work Experience
High school graduate or equivalent. Minimum of 5 years of experience in railroad car mechanical repair, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Must be proficient at using a computer, including Microsoft products. Must possess a current valid driver's license and be insurable on IAIS's commercial auto policy. This position will require a CDL in the first six months.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Mental Requirements
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the General Code of Operating Rules, IAIS Rules, FRA, and AAR regulations.
• Good supervisory and leadership skills are needed to direct the workforce. Must be able to professionally express direction, decisions, and ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to listen carefully and keep others informed.
• Must be able to inspire others to excel and demonstrate initiative and decisiveness.
• Proven ability to provide direct and constructive feedback to others.
• Must be able to work well under pressure. Proven ability to control emotions and take responsibility for actions.
• Demonstrated ability to keep records, complete material documents, work train reports, and attend all training courses required by the railroad.
• General office equipment skills, including Microsoft PC-based computing. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer for spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, and database information.
• Ability to use common sense and maintain an overall level of safety awareness when operating in the work environment.
• Ability to make effective decisions when responding to changes, interruptions, and obstructions in work processes.
• Flexibility to accept change and react willingly, appropriately, and in a timely manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, management, direct reports, and customers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds.
• Eye-hand coordination as well as the ability to grasp.
• Capable of working in confined spaces and at heights. Ability to climb without fear of heights.
• Ability to stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
• Must possess at least 20/40 distance visual acuity in each eye with or without glasses. Has the ability to distinguish color with no more than four (4) errors in a sixteen (16) plate isochromatic test. An average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40 decibels a 500 HZ, 1000 HZ and 2000 HZ, aided or unaided.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work performed may be inside or outside and the tools and material used in the surrounding workplace, expose the incumbent to the following conditions on a regular basis; Weather, noise (from air compressors and other noisy equipment), vibrations (from power equipment), dust, pollen (seasonal exposure to ragweed and other vegetation). May be stressful at times due to work interruptions.
The job requires the individual to follow standard safety procedures, be alert, and take necessary precautions (e.g., wearing/using protective clothes and equipment) to avoid possible injuries or health problems that may result from the following: walking on irregular ground, exposure to irritants/chemicals, working around moving equipment and other types of equipment, working at heights and elevations and exposure to extreme cold and heat for periods of more than one hour.
