Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level in the construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of County buildings.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the major and minor construction, repair or alternation of floors, ceilings, stairways, partitions, doors, and roofs. Work assignments are received from a superior in terms of the job to be accomplished and its location and are usually accompanied by sketches, specifications or oral instructions. Work is performed in accordance with established trade practices. New or unusual work assignments are accompanied by detailed drawings and any irregular problems are resolved through discussion with a superior. Work is inspected for quality of workmanship and compliance with work orders. This position is under the supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor.

Examples of Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Performs general carpentry work in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, offices, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, and screens.
• Selects, cuts, and trims lumber to size.
• Operates and adjusts power carpentry tools and equipment.
• Replaces glass in doors and windows builds, scaffolds and concrete forms.
• Builds and hangs doors and repairs tables, chairs, and desks.
• Performs general painting work as needed.
• Performs related work as assigned.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the carpentry trade.
• Working knowledge of tools and materials used in repairing and constructing wooden articles.
• Skill in use of the carpenter's hand tools and woodwork machines.
• Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings or sketches.
• Ability to make accurate arithmetical calculations.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform strenuous tasks for considerable periods of time.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of high school or equivalent and five years of experience in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings; OR, a demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks. Technical or trade school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Special Requirement
  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Subject to overtime, calls back to work for urgent/emergency situations and work during inclement weather.

Driving is Essential
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
